Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to provide a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, and students, and provide campus smoking guidelines.
Background
This policy implements CSU Executive Order 599 in accordance with Education Code 89030 and 89031; Assembly Bill 846; Governor’s Executive Order W-42-93; California State Government Code 7596 – 7598; CSU Human Resources Coded Memorandum 2002-26 and 2003-19; and other pertinent laws, regulations, or revisions.

Accountability
The Associate Vice President, Human Resources Programs, administers this policy at California State University Channel Islands for faculty and staff. The Associate Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students and the Executive Director of Housing and Residential Education administer this policy for students. Applicability
This policy applies to all individuals on the campus of California State University Channel Islands and excludes University Glen except for the businesses and residences of the University Town Center while those residences are sub-leased to the University for student housing.
Definition(s)
Smoking - the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs or other water pipes, electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes or electronic pipes, and other unregulated smoking products.
Text
The goal of this policy is to provide smoke-free areas on campus to limit exposure to second-hand smoke. Smoking is prohibited in all California State University Channel Islands work locations, buildings, and in all State-owned vehicles. Smoking is only allowed in locations which are at least 50 feet away from any structure on the campus including bus stops, athletic playing fields, and outdoor dining areas. Further, smoking is prohibited in areas of the campus that are deemed to be especially vulnerable to fire, including the hillsides and open, undeveloped land on campus.
