Purpose
SP 14-17 establishes a new unit load limitation for undergraduate students on probation (14 units).
Background
SP 13-02 established a unit load limitation for undergraduate students on academic probation and included a procedure that students could pursue to exceed the limitation. SP 14-17 updates that policy to allow for the completion of required 4-unit remedial and/or lab-based coursework, while maintaining the existing policy for students in good academic standing.

Definition(s)
Advisor refers to a member of the academic advising staff who assists students in course selection and substitutions, degree planning, and various other opportunities.
Good Academic Standing: Not on academic or disciplinary probation.
Probation: An undergraduate student is subject to academic probation if at any time either the student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA) in all college work attempted or the student’s cumulative GPA at CSU Channel Islands falls below 2.0.

- An undergraduate student with good academic standing may enroll in up to 18 units without advisor approval.
- An undergraduate student on academic probation may enroll in up to 14 units without advisor approval.
- An undergraduate student with good academic standing who wishes to enroll in more than 18 units is required to have
- written approval from a faculty advisor or chair in the student’s declared major, or
- written approval from an academic advisor if the student has not yet declared a major.
- An undergraduate student on academic probation who wishes to enroll in more than 14 units is required to have an academic advisor or chair’s written approval.
