The University has a responsibility to protect the people and the environment entrusted to its care. California State University Channel Islands must, insofar as it is reasonably within the control of the University to do so, maintain a safe and healthy environment for students, staff and visitors.
There exists an extensive framework of local, State and Federal occupational safety and environmental protection laws and regulations, and a framework of agencies that promulgate and enforce those laws and regulations.
The Associate Vice President, Human Resource Programs, administers this policy at California State University Channel Islands. Questions, concerns, suggestions, or complaints should be directed to (805) 437-8423.
The President bears overall responsibility for Campus environmental protection, health and safety. Vice Presidents are responsible for providing adequate support to effectively implement Health and Safety programs within their areas of responsibility. The Office of Environment, Safety and Risk Management is responsible for analyzing laws and regulations in the context of University operations, and developing appropriate and compliant Environment, Health and Safety programs. The University Safety Committee will support the Health and Safety Policy by addressing safety concerns and providing communication between interested parties. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring the safety of subordinates through compliance with Health and Safety programs, constant hazard evaluation, and enforcement of procedures. Employees are responsible for complying with all programs and procedures, familiarizing themselves with job hazards and reporting unsafe conditions.

California State University Channel Islands is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for students, staff and visitors. Various laws and regulations require this goal, and moreover, by ethical and leadership values that are consistent with the University mission.
Occupational safety and environmental protection laws assign responsibility for this general goal to senior management. To achieve this goal the University develops and implements Environment, Health and Safety programs. The programs assign responsibilities to employees throughout the University. All University employees shall comply with our Environment, Health and Safety programs.
The terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement shall prevail. If there is any conflict between this policy and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Collective Bargaining Agreement is controlling.
